Unlike most other reptiles, snakes don’t have eyelids, instead they have clear scales called spectacles that sit over their eyes and protect them from drying out and becoming damaged. When snakes are due to shed their skins they become dull and milky in colour, and the scales over their eyelids cloud over. If you see a snake with cloudy eyes then it’s pretty easy to think it’s asleep, but it’s just getting ready to trade its old skin in for a new one!
